COMPARE · FINGERPRINTJS
fingerprint.dev vs. fingerprint.com
Same category. Different audience. Pick by fit.
THE SHORT VERSION
Two products. One category.
fingerprint.com (formerly FingerprintJS) is the company that turned the open-source FingerprintJS library into an enterprise device-identification platform. They are good at it. If your buying motion includes a sales call, a security review, a procurement workflow, and an annual contract, they're a strong choice and you should talk to them.
fingerprint.dev is built for the other half of the market: developers and product teams who want to drop a hosted /identify API into a stack today, on a free tier, with no sales call and no contract. Same category of evidence. Different audience.
This page exists to help you self-select honestly. We win when the right people pick us, not when the wrong people do.
HOW THEY DIFFER
Side-by-side.
fingerprint.com: paid plans start in the low hundreds per month; volume-priced enterprise contracts above that.
fingerprint.dev: free tier with 1,000 identify requests / month, no card. Hobby is $9/mo, Starter $89/mo, Pro $199/mo. Stripe self-serve.
fingerprint.com: Pro plan is self-serve; Enterprise tiers go through sales.
fingerprint.dev: self-serve at every tier. Enterprise pricing exists, but the path to "I'm using it" starts in the console, not a calendar invite.
fingerprint.com: rich. visitor identification plus a portfolio of smart signals — bot detection, VPN, incognito, suspect score, identification confidence, and more.
fingerprint.dev: intentionally narrow. One /identify call returns a visitor_id and a confidence score. Your product decides what to do with the evidence.
fingerprint.com: browser-side entropy (canvas, webgl, audio, fonts, navigator) with server-side correlation. SDKs across web and mobile.
fingerprint.dev: request evidence (TLS, TCP, HTTP) plus optional hashed browser evidence from a JS SDK. Same underlying science, surfaced through a smaller API.
fingerprint.com: hours to days, depending on which smart signals you wire into which workflow.
fingerprint.dev: one curl or one SDK call. The first identify takes about as long as it takes to paste an API key.
fingerprint.com: SOC 2 Type II, full enterprise compliance stack, EU/US data-residency options.
fingerprint.dev: DPA available, SOC 2 program in progress, US processing by default with EU residency on the roadmap. Honest about where we are.
WHAT'S THE SAME
The science isn't proprietary.
The fingerprinting techniques themselves — TLS handshake hashing, canvas entropy, font enumeration, audio rendering, navigator surfaces — are public knowledge. Both products use the same family of signals because the signals are what they are.
The difference is the engine on top: the matching, the confidence calibration, the operational discipline to keep signals stable as browsers change. We've written about that elsewhere. Both teams take it seriously. Both teams will give you a stable visitor_id.
WHEN TO PICK FINGERPRINT.COM
Honest reasons to pick them instead.
- You need their bot detection, VPN detection, or other smart signals as first-class features rather than something you build on top of
visitor_idand confidence - Your procurement process requires SOC 2 Type II as a hard prerequisite today
- You already have an enterprise contract with them and the switching cost outweighs the savings
- You're operating at a volume where a six-figure annual contract is cheaper than per-call pricing
- You need a vendor that will join an incident bridge during your launch week
If any of those describe you, fingerprint.com is the more honest answer. We'd rather you go there than be unhappy here.
WHEN TO PICK FINGERPRINT.DEV
Honest reasons to pick us.
- You want to evaluate the integration before talking to anyone, on a real free tier
- You want one focused API surface (
visitor_id+ confidence) and you'll wire the rest of your fraud / verification / attribution stack yourself - You want self-serve pricing all the way up — including the parts that other vendors gate behind sales
- You're an indie builder, a small team, or a product engineer who'd rather ship today than scope a procurement cycle
- You want a vendor that ships docs, code samples, and APIs the way a developer-facing company is supposed to
THE PUNCHLINE
Same fingerprint. Different fit.
Picking between fingerprint.com and fingerprint.dev is not a quality decision. It's a fit decision. They've built the enterprise version of this category. We've built the version for builders. Both are real.
If you're the person who'd rather make the first /identify call than schedule a meeting about making it, we built fingerprint.dev for you.
